At the foot of the mountain Namsan with the Seoul Tower is a traditional village located. This Namsangol Hanok Village shows the architecture and daily life in a traditional Korean houses called ‚Hanok‘
Modern Taiwan was founded by the former president and revolutionary leader Chiang Kai-Shek, after Chinese civil war in 1949. It is only understandable that the people wanted to dedicate a special memorial place to him. So, the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall was build. This huge complex was build between 1976 and 1980.
People gathering to hundreds inside the gigantic hall to watch the hourly change of the guards of honor. It’s an impressive performance of the skilled guards. A great subject for photo- and videographers too, if you get a place in the front row though.
Nowadays the people enjoying the huge park with ponds and cherry trees. Especially a warm, sunny day like lucky me got here. Certainly there are many people taking selfies and group photos for memories. Amongst them was a young lady i got into talk with. Sofia took a few photos for her Instagram account ( https://www.instagram.com/sofiameeow/ ) and agreed for a quick, spontaneous photo session on this beautiful location.
Not far from Taipei is a hot spring area in the town of Beitou. It’s easy and fast reachable from Taipei by metro train. In a few steps, a green park invites for a stroll, or to play mahjong, or skating.
I found the public bathing places. There’s an open air one, but i decided to go to the more authentic bathing house. At entrance i got informed, that female and male visitors have separate zones and use to bath naked. I acknowledged and entered, after changing room, a room packed with men sitting in and around two pools. The temperature of the water was between 42-44°C, while the second pool had a thermometer showing constant 45.9°C. The hottest bath i ever had.
Back in Shilin, i went another time to the nearby night market, enjoying some food and the lively atmosphere.
On my way south, i got a hint to visit Ribe, the oldest town in Danmark. So i took a detour to stroll trough this historical place with medieval charm.
Some Impressions:
To understand Israel, one have to understand the history of its people.
The traumatic peak of the Jewish diaspora was the so-called holocaust in the 1930’s in Europe. The official website of Yad Vashem explains:
„The Holocaust was unprecedented genocide, total and systematic, perpetrated by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, with the aim of annihilating the Jewish people. The primary motivation was the Nazis‘ anti-Semitic racist ideology. Between 1933 and 1941 Nazi Germany pursued a policy that dispossessed the Jews of their rights and their property, followed by the branding and the concentration of the Jewish population. This policy gained broad support in Germany and much of occupied Europe. In 1941, following the invasion of the Soviet Union, the Nazis and their collaborators launched the systematic mass murder of the Jews. By 1945 nearly six million Jews had been murdered. „
Walking through the rooms of museum/memorial, the visitor learn about how the hate against the Jewish people raised. It displays many individual fates and the suffer of an entire folk. Not to forget all the heroes, who fought and helped these people to escape.
It’s a place to remember the loss and keep in mind to fight for a peaceful future. At least i’d like to understand it that way. Unfortunately, i was informed at this very day, that Israel army attacked and destroyed the airport of Aleppo, which is crucial for the help of victims of the recent earthquake in that region. This incident wasn’t confirmed, nor denied, from the Israel officials. But it let me a bitter taste when thinking of the future of this region.
My plan was a nice picnic and some rest in the famous gardens of Baha’i.
The Hanging Gardens of Baha’i are on the slopes of Carmel mountains and overlooking Haifa and its bay.
They surrounds the Shrine of Bab, where the founder of the Baha’i Faith is buried.
Unfortunately, only a small part of the gardens are open for the public. The shrine itself was not to enter.
However, i could had a little stroll in quite, peaceful surroundings and took some picturres.
Where all began. Old Jaffa is the oldest part of the region and nowadays a main tourist attraction.
From far I can see the impressive silhouette of the old city and its strong wall towards the sea. I approach it along the beach. Suddenly i stood in front of these walls, on a square with little shops, bars, cafes, galleries and street musicians. Not only the tourists, but also the locals like this place to go out and enjoy the almost medieval atmosphere.
A board over a small entrance to steep staircase says ‚Welcome to Old Jaffa‘ and indicates an entrance to he small alleys of the old town. I tried to hide from the many trippers. Indeed i found some lonely, nice corners to enjoy some minutes of solitude.
Reached the top, there’s another square. A big fountain and the St Peter’s church on one side, more bars and souvenirs on the other. A small bridge leads to the Abrasha Park, with a beautiful view over the city and beaches. Time to go back there, i decided
Most people coming to South Africa can’t wait to chase the „Big 5“ and capture them on their camera. The „Big 5“ means Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino, Lion and Leopard. On the downside of tracking them down is the danger to get attacked from them. That’s why one should stay always in the car, not daring to approach them or wandering around unprotected in their habitat.
There are also parks and wildlife farms with none of these dangerous, big animals. But it doesn’t mean it’s less thrilling to visit them. In the opposite, to walk trough the bush, jogging or riding a bicycle, and meet wild antelopes, giraffes or zebras on eye to eye is amazing. Well, bit difficult to look the giraffes on the eyes, but still.
My dear friends was planning to spend a weekend in such a private wildlife farm and invited me to join them. What a feeling to move free around, chasing the giraffes, going for a so called „game drive“ to find more antelopes, such as elands, wildebeest, oryx, blessbock, impalas, steenbok, waterbuck and so on. Off course also zebras, snakes and many kind of birds.
I felt so blessed to be there, enjoying nature, wildlife and good talks with old and new friends. Stopping midst in the bush and having a sundowner, before return to the base for a nice evening at the braai, the Southafrican barbecue.
Der Tagesausflug zu einer ehemaligen Militärbasis fiel aus. Also einfach mal durch die Stadt bummeln und einen der berühmten Parks besuchen. Der Mariinskyi Park soll der schönste von allen sein.
Aber erst einfach mal drauf losgehen. Strassen, Parks und Fluss entlang. Ich sehe Graffitti. Treffe auf einige Protestierende, die entweder ihr Zelt vor Ministerien aufgebaut haben, oder laute Musik vor öffentlichen Gebäuden abspielen. Auch Spuren und Mahnmale aus der 2013/14er Bewegung sind noch zu sehen. Dann Statuen, grosse und kleinere. In den Parks, am Strassenrand, bei Brunnen, vor öffentlichen Gebäuden. Überall. Über Kopfsteinpflaster gelange ich in den besagten Park. Viel Grün und schattige Bäume. Einige Blumenrabatte um den grossen Brunnen herum. Ein Park wie jeder andere auch. Mit Jungfamilien, Jungverliebten und jung gebliebene Retter. Und Kaffee-Stände natürlich. Ich kann nicht was Besonderes hervorheben, muss aber zugeben, dass mir Kiev insgesamt gefällt. Nur schon einfach durch die Stadt zu schlendern macht Spass. Und so bleibe ich in Bewegung, bis auf wenige Kaffeepausen und ein abendliches Bier.
